With a heavy heart, we share news of the passing of Eleanor (Ellie) Burg, a longtime pillar of the Orange County Jewish community, on Saturday, November 21. She passed away just four months after losing her beloved husband of 69 years, Irving (Irv) X. Burg (z”l).

The funeral will be held tomorrow, November 24, at 2:00 p.m. at Pacific View Memorial Park, 3500 Pacific View Drive, Corona Del Mar, followed by a meal of condolence at Temple Bat Yahm (1011 Camelback Street, Newport Beach).

Ellie and Irv were married on March 17, 1946 in Los Angeles and shared a strong passion for community involvement and philanthropy. Together they quickly became dedicated pillars of every community in which they lived. After living in Encino and Pasadena, the couple and their two children, Laurie and Paul moved to Orange County in 1971. Ellie joined the board of the then-termed Jewish Federation Orange County (JFOC), became President of its Women's Division in the early 80s, and later, in 1987, President of the JFOC Board of Directors. In fact, Ellie was amongst the female presidents of a Jewish Federation in North America. In 1993, she was awarded Woman of the Year by the Women’s Division of JFOC.

The Burgs were actively involved with the Jewish Community Foundation of Orange County (JCFOC), having helped to found it in 1981. Ellie was a member of the founding Board of Directors at Heritage Pointe and served as an active member of the Opening Day Committee. At the University of California Irvine they were members of the Chancellors Club and chaired the campaign to create the Teller Family Chair of Jewish History.

Irv and Ellie also supported many other local organizations and causes together, sharing a passion for the arts and for Jewish life. They supported the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Opera Pacific, United Way, the Mental Health Advisory Board of Orange County, Hoag Hospital, and Jewish War Veterans, among others. They were active members of Temple Bat Yahm and generous and enthusiastic supporters of the Merage Jewish Community Center (JCC) and the Bureau of Jewish Education. In 2012 Irv and Ellie were among a group of community leaders in whose honor a special Torah scroll, for use by military chaplains, was dedicated at the JCC.

Ellie is survived by children Paul F. and wife Linda Burg; daughter Laurie Burg Minerbi and husband Walter Minerbi; 4 grandchildren (Daniel Minerbi, Gina Minerbi Cooper and husband Joe Cooper, Michael Burg Minerbi; and Brandon Burg and wife Kim Burg); and 2 great-grandchildren (Willem Burg and Johanna Burg).

May Ellie’s family be comforted among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.

Irv and Ellie were members of the Jewish Community Foundation of Orange County's 'Create a Jewish Legacy' program and signers of the Endowment Book of Life. Their family asks that memorial donations be sent to the Irv and Ellie Burg Donor Advised Endowment Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Orange County.
