Part 1 of 3

Tuesday July 28, 2020 – Savyon Liebrecht
Tuesday August 4, 2020 – Etgar Keret
Tuesday August 11, 2020 – Sayed Kashua

If modern Hebrew literature was born of a desire to solve the problem of Jewish life in Diaspora and to promote the Zionist cultural project, contemporary Israeli short fiction is something else indeed. Proving the tremendous success of the Hebrew cultural revival, contemporary fiction has also come to reflect an increasingly fragmented , cosmopolitan Israeli identity and society, one riven with oppositions between ethnic and social groups, collectivism and individualism, religion and secularism. Earlier Hebrew literature often reflected a disdain for the Diaspora, whereas contemporary writing often displays a fascination with what the world outside of Israel might offer. And if earlier Israeli fiction was dominated by an Ashkenazi, socialist perspective, the past few decades in Israeli fiction have brought to the fore new voices, from different ethnic communities, writing in eclectic, often shorter forms. This course will look at this exciting contemporary Israeli fiction through the lens of three of its most important, and internationally recognized contemporary writers Savyon Liebrecht, Etgar Keret, and Sayed Kashua.
