The Splendor of Anaheim

If you take the city of Anaheim's Historical Walking Tour, you will see not only a splendid example of Queen Anne architecture, but a bit of Orange County's rich Jewish history as well!  Hippolyte Cahen, a Jewish merchant who lived in Anaheim in the late 1800s, built this beautiful residence in 1882 and is seen above, on the porch with his wife Adelaide, in a 1902 photo.  To learn more about Orange County's 150 years of Jewish history, click here!

Crisis in Georgia: How We've Helped

Meya Papisnedov, from war-ravaged Gori, Georgia, was among the hundreds of Jews rescued this month, thanks to supporters of the Generations Fund, our annual campaign.  Jews in the line of fire were immediately evacuated to safety, and many, including Meya, have already begun new lives in Israel.  The JDC and Jewish Agency, our overseas partners, were ready to help because of your support of the Generations Fund.  But the declining dollar abroad means that more core dollars are needed, urgently.  Click here to donate now!  Click here for more info on how we've made a difference in this critical situation.  Click here to meet some of the people you've helped.  Click here to add your voice to the Georgia Crisis blog.

Free Legal Assistance for Survivors

The German government has announced a new, one-time payment of 2,000 Euros (approximately $3,000) for Holocaust survivors who worked in ghettos.  Through a community partnership of Jewish Federation, Jewish Family Service and several law firms with local offices, free legal assistance is available until the end of August, for survivors who wish to apply for this payment.  Click here to request more information.

If Not Now, When?

This is a year of increasing, urgent needs for our Jewish community.  It is not a myth that there is poverty -- that there are Jewish families in need -- right here in Orange County.  More and more people are turning to the Generations Fund of Jewish Federation for support.  We have the responsibility to care for our own, to help them in their time of greatest need.  As Rabbi Hillel said, if not now, when? How Can We Reach You?

We learned a valuable lesson from our New Orleans Federation colleagues after Hurricane Katrina:  we must be able to identify, reach and assist every Jewish person in Orange County in the event of a natural disaster or regional emergency.  Your participation in our fast and easy landmark Community Survey will help greatly in our community disaster preparedness; it's also a great opportunity to share your opinions and interests!  Click here to answer 3 short questions that make a difference.
